Build ABM From Account Evidence, Not Wish Lists

OpenView argues that effective account-based marketing begins with a narrow, data-backed ICP and repeatable account-selection rules, then connects direct outreach and measurement to pipeline and revenue outcomes across teams.

Revomnis take

Revomnis take OpenView is right that ABM should start with a narrow, data-backed ICP and repeatable account-selection rules. Named-account ambition is not enough. The account list must reflect evidence about fit, economics, buyer need, and the company’s ability to serve that segment well. Failure mode Teams often build ABM lists as executive wish lists. Large logos, familiar brands, and theoretical contract values dominate selection, while actual win patterns, sales-cycle friction, delivery constraints, and buyer access are ignored. Expensive personalization is then applied to accounts that never had a credible reason to engage. Operating rules 1. Combine several evidence sources. Use closed-won and lost data, customer interviews, retention and expansion patterns, unit economics, implementation complexity, operational signals, and frontline sales knowledge. No single data source should define the market alone. 2. Convert evidence into rules and exclusions. Specify which account characteristics increase fit, which require review, and which disqualify. An ICP that cannot consistently include and exclude accounts is not operational. 3. Create account tiers with different service levels. Strategic accounts may receive manual research, buying-committee mapping, tailored proof, and broader email + LinkedIn coordination. Standard accounts can use classification-driven messaging. Tiering should govern effort, not just labels. 4. Define stakeholder coverage before activation. Decide which roles must be reached, which problem matters to each, and how messages should differ. ABM is not repeated contact with one executive. 5. Report account-level progress and learning. Show selection rationale, stakeholders approached, replies, objections, qualification, meeting status, and final disposition. Measurement should reveal whether the original account thesis was correct. How Revomnis applies it Revomnis translates the shared ICP into a controlled outbound plan. We build and classify the account list, assign research depth, map relevant roles, coordinate email + LinkedIn, manage replies, and expose every account’s progress through portal visibility. The client contributes offer knowledge and sales feedback, while Revomnis maintains the engine. Decision test / what good looks like Good ABM can defend why each account received its level of investment and show whether that decision produced a qualified conversation. The list should become sharper as outcomes accumulate. If the same prestigious accounts remain targeted despite repeated evidence of poor fit or access, the program is driven by preference, not evidence.
